From kimchi online-shop to the Korean restaurant in Cherkasy: Oksana’s entrepreneurship journey
Oksana, along with her husband and daughter, left her hometown of Kharkiv due to the war in March 2022. This is how the family ended up in Cherkasy. Before the full-scale invasion, Oksana sold kimchi – a popular Korean snack – through an online store on Instagram. At one time, her daughter became interested in K-pop culture, and Oksana not only supported this hobby, but also began to study the Korean language and culture, including cuisine.

Ukraine's Heating Infrastructure Under Continued Attack: Support Ukrainian Families Survive the Winter
This morning, another Russian missile strike hit Kyiv, causing extensive damage to civilian infrastructure. Hundreds of residential buildings, as well as dozens of schools, kindergartens, and healthcare facilities, were left without heating as a result. One of the missiles exploded just a couple of kilometres from the Estonian Refugee Council's Kyiv office, highlighting the extreme conditions in which our team continues its work.

Together with local partner, ERC provides in-kind assistance for winter energy in Donetsk region
Valerii and his wife live in the village in Donetsk region. Their children are already grown up and live separately. Valerii is a pensioner now but before he worked for 40 years at a local mine. Shortly before the start of the full-scale invasion, the family moved into a new house, which they built for a long time themselves.

Family Celebration in Võru Brought Together Ukrainians and Their Friends
On 7 December, a pre-Christmas Ukrainian-Estonian family celebration was held in Võru in cooperation with the local Red Cross office, bringing together around 120 participants. The event featured a concert performance introducing Ukrainian Christmas traditions, with singing, dancing, and acting.

"Empowering Women" incubation programme selects 41 top business ideas
On 22–23 November, at Ilmaveere in Setomaa, the final of the "Empowering Women" entrepreneurship programme hackathon, organised in collaboration by the Estonian Refugee Council, Garage48, and Swedbank, selected 41 of the best business ideas from 60. These ideas will now proceed to a business incubation programme running until the end of March.

The UPBEAT employability programme, launched in the summer in collaboration with the Estonian Refugee Council, Startup Refugees, and Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, aims to increase the competitiveness of young people with refugee and migrant backgrounds in entrepreneurship and the labour market through learning about artificial intelligence (AI).

ERC's event for 1000 days of full scale war brought together hundreds of people
Yesterday, 19 November, a support event for Ukraine was held at Freedom Square in Tallinn, where 1,000 candles were lit to mark 1,000 days since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. Hundreds of people gathered in solidarity with Ukraine, and several individuals connected to Ukraine delivered speeches.

Estonian Refugee Council Releases Brochure Marking 1,000 Days of War
Today, as 1,000 days have passed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Estonian Refugee Council’s Ukraine office has published a brochure highlighting the organisation’s efforts in assisting hundreds of thousands of people in Ukraine’s most hard-to-reach areas. As of 31 October 2023, the Estonian Refugee Council has provided aid to 439,107 Ukrainians, amounting to nearly €57 million over the past 1,000 days.

Estonian Refugee Council to Light a Thousand Candles in Support of Ukraine
On 19 November, from 5 PM to 9 PM, the Estonian Refugee Council will host a solidarity event in Freedom Square, Tallinn, where a thousand candles will be lit to mark 1,000 days since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The event is part of the ongoing campaign “1,000 Days of War, 1,000 Warm Homes.”

Estonia, Latvia, and Finland Wrap Up Collaborative Project on Refugee Labour Market Integration
The project, which aimed to map out opportunities for people with a refugee background to enter the labour market, culminated in an Estonian visit at the beginning of November. During the visit, participants explored the activities and initiatives of the Estonian Refugee Council and the opportunities available to refugees in Estonia.

The Estonian Refugee Council launched a donation campaign on 13 November – “1000 Days of War, 1000 Warm Homes” – to collect donations during November and December to provide heating support for 1,000 Ukrainian households near the frontline.

Art for healing and self-development: The story of “Kachur” online school
Ms. Nataliya Kachur comes from the city of Soledar in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. Due to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Nataliya and her family moved away from the frontlines and to the central region of Cherkasy. It was not easy for Nataliya’s family to suddenly uproot their lives and settle in a completely new place far from their social network and previous jobs. Having 20 years of experience in teaching art, Nataliya decided to begin offering online drawing lessons, leveraging her love for art to earn a living in an unfamiliar area.

International Humanitarian Conference in Tallinn Focuses on Ethical Dilemmas and Innovation in Humanitarian Aid
The international humanitarian conference, organised by the Estonian Refugee Council, brought together experts and organisations from around the world in Tallinn yesterday. In its second year, the conference focused on ethical dilemmas, anticipatory action, and the use of artificial intelligence in humanitarian aid.
